The secretary of the Air Force on Tuesday will present the Air Force Cross to a combat controller from the 21st Special Tactics Squadron during a ceremony at Pope Air Force Base.
Michael B. Donley will present Staff Sgt. Zachary J. Rhyner the Air Force’s second highest award for valor in the 1 p.m. ceremony.
Rhyner is being recognized for his actions during combat in Shok Valley, Afghanistan, on April 6.
The Air Force chief of staff, Gen. Norton A. Schwartz, will present Rhyner with the Purple Heart for injuries he received during the mission.
